Position Purpose: To facilitate access and engagement of pregnant women in prenatal care for routine and high risk pregnancies. Align high risk pregnant members with OB care management when high risk conditions are identified. The Maternal Health Assistant (MHA) also plays a vital role in the financial process by completing total OB authorizations, newborn authorizations, and timely newborn reporting to AHCCCS.


  • Process authorizations for total global OB (TOB) and visits only (TOBOO)
  • Communicate telephonically with providers and members
  • Verify member pregnancy status and expected delivery date
  • Assist members with prenatal appointments
  • Provide members with information on community resources
  • Obtain TOBs from OB providers
  • Identify members with high risk conditions
  • Access maternity, hospital, and newborn reports
  • Assign pregnant members with high risk conditions to OB Care Managers
  • Process authorizations for newborn deliveries
  • Notify AHCCCS of newborn deliveries
  • Documentation of interventions in care management software program
  • Communicate with Maternal Child Health leadership
  • Mailroom submission of the Stork Report for member mailings on pregnancy related materials
  • Mailroom submission of the Newborn Report for member Post-partum mailings
  • Perform other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned

Education / Experience / Other Requirements

Education:   (include field of study)

  •  High School Diploma or equivalent GED preferred
  • Completion of Medical Assistant Program preferred

Years of Experience:  

  • Customer service experience desired: 2-3 years
  • Medicaid experience preferred

Specialized Knowledge:  

  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Computer experience necessary
  • Effective time management and prioritization skills
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills
  • Knowledge of professional and community based resources
  • Ability to work cooperatively, positively, and collaboratively
  • Ability to use electronic medical record and claims systems
  • Ability to work respectfully and positively with members, providers, and peers
